Afrobeats sensation Burna Boy has stirred controversy by stepping down from his self-declared “African Giant” title, passing the mantle to fellow artist Falz.

Burna Boy Abandons 'African Giant' Title Amid Protest Uproar

This surprising decision followed a recent social media outburst where Burna Boy distanced himself from the ongoing protest against bad governance in Nigeria. The controversy started after the October 2020 EndSARS protests, when some protesters tried to boycott his music.

In a recent tweet, he claimed the fight in him has died. (See the tweet below)

What he fails to understand is that he never possessed the resolve he claimed to have lost. His excuses reveal his cowardice. When will he understand that ‘this fight’ isn’t for us, but for himself and his children’s children? Unlike the legendary Fela Kuti, who never wavered in his activism, look at his children today, and imagine their father said the fight in them died.

Burna Boy Abandons 'African Giant' Title Amid Protest Uproar

Funny how people fail to notice Burna has a history of being an attention-seeking whore with chronic main character syndrome because tell me why he’ll revisit a tweet since 2020 to quote in recent times about “I’m not doing again”.
These moves raise questions about his motives, particularly given his song lyrics suggesting a lack of appreciation for his efforts (laments in “Is this the modafuckin thanks I get)

Truth be told, he NEVER had that fight in him, he never demonstrated the true spirit of activism, and that’s the harsh reality. During the pivotal 2020 protests, other stars like Wizkid and Davido were more visibly engaged. Whereas, Burna Boy’s choice to remain on the sidelines while Nigerians endure hardships, only to voice frustration when criticized, reveals a lack of genuine concern for the nation’s struggles.

It’ll have been better if he remained silent than mocking Nigerians for years for not fighting against government oppression, then when it’s time to protest, Burna boy hides online forming vex because his so-called activism faced criticism.

It just shows he never cared about the affairs of this nation, it’s all been a smoke screen to give a reason why he’s the self-acclaimed “African giant” in the music scene. An African giant that doesn’t consistently confront Africa/Nigeria’s economic and intellectual challenges with his music or platform?? No be by winning Grammy oo because it seems his achievements in his career have absolved him of the responsibility of actively using his platform for social change.

The protest #EndBadGovernance has been going on for a week now and the participation of influential figures remains limited.

It’s crucial to remember that this movement transcends any single celebrity. So this protest is not about Burna Boy. The affairs of the state have nothing to do with him, he’s not our concern. Whether the fight dies or resurrects, whether he decides to speak up or not, it’s not our business, so let him be. The focus should be on affordable living and good governance.

While some celebrities have admirably lent their voices to the cause, those who choose to remain silent or relinquish an unearned title because they feel hurt should not distract from the larger goal. Let the true advocates lead, and let the rest fade into the background.
