In this edition of What’s The Press Saying, we sit with Outsyd DJ—a rising force in the music scene whose name alone tells you he isn’t here to blend in. Known for his eclectic sets, rooted Afro vibes, and infectious energy, Outsyd DJ is carving out a lane that’s boldly his. From his Benin roots to international stages, his journey is layered with persistence, creativity, and purpose.
We asked him 12 questions that dig into his artistry, influences, and what drives him. His answers not only offer insight into his world but also reveal how deeply music is intertwined with his identity and vision.
- How did you come up with your artist name, Outsyd DJ, and what does it signify for you?
“I came up with the artist name ‘Outsyd DJ’ as a reflection of my desire to stand out and be different in the music scene. The name was suggested by Victor AD as DJ Outside but I had to spice it up, you know. The name signifies my journey of embracing my unique style and perspective, suggesting that I operate outside the conventional norms of the industry. It represents my commitment to pushing boundaries and creating music that resonates with those who feel like outsyders themselves.”
Right from his name, you get the sense that Outsyd DJ is committed to standing apart—not just for the sake of it, but because that’s where his creativity truly lives. The idea of being “outside” becomes less about exclusion and more about owning a unique perspective in a saturated industry.
- What inspired you to pursue a career as a DJ and music artist?
“I was inspired to pursue a career as a DJ and music artist because of my love for music back then in Benin and the way it brings people together. I’ve always been captivated by how a great track can change the vibe of a room and connect people on the dance floor. Plus, the thrill of creating my own mixes and sharing my passion with others really drives me. It’s all about the energy and the joy of making unforgettable memories through music!”
That sense of community and connection—how music turns strangers into one shared pulse on the dance floor—is at the heart of Outsyd’s artistry. He’s not just mixing tracks; he’s curating memories.
- Can you share the story behind your latest track or project?
“My latest track, ‘Feel the Mood,’ has a cool backstory! It was created by Outsyd Eddie and Famous Pluto. What’s surprising is that Eddie is actually my younger brother, and Famous is Shalli’s younger brother too! They made a freestyle video on their way back from my place, and it went viral. I just had to call Busy and Tega Boi to add their magic to it, and the rest is history!”
This story captures how fluid and organic his process is. It’s a reminder that for Outsyd, creativity often starts with family, flows through community, and ends up with a record that brings people together.

- What has been the most memorable performance or event in your career so far?
“I’d say the most memorable performance for me was last December when we had two shows in less than 12 hours in two different countries! It was such a whirlwind, but it turned out to be a huge success. I had to come back to Lagos that same night, and it was just amazing and unforgettable!”
This answer tells us a lot about his drive and endurance. That kind of back-to-back hustle is not just impressive—it’s the kind of grit that’s clearly shaping how big his name is becoming on and off the decks.
- How do you stay inspired and keep your sound fresh in such a dynamic industry?
“Staying curious and open-minded is key!”
Sometimes the shortest answers say the most. Outsyd’s approach to staying current isn’t trend-chasing—it’s about openness. He keeps his ear (and mind) to the ground, always ready to evolve.

- What’s the creative process like for you when producing new music?
“I like to be alone.”
There’s something powerful about solitude for creators. For Outsyd, that quiet space allows him to tap into raw ideas without noise—just feeling, intuition, and instinct.
- Who are your biggest influences, and how have they shaped your music?
“I’d say my biggest influences are DJ Spinal, DJ Neptune, and Black Coffee, just to name a few! They’ve really shaped my sound. Plus, my music is inspired by the roots of the ancient city of Benin, which adds a unique flavor to what I create.”
His influences span continents and generations—but what really stands out is how he brings that energy back home. Benin’s legacy isn’t just in his blood; it’s in his basslines.
- What challenges have you faced in your journey as a DJ, and how did you overcome them?
“As a DJ, I struggled to get my music recognized in a competitive industry. I worked hard, played smaller gigs, and focused on networking and building my brand. It took time, but my persistence paid off. I know networking can be tough, but taking it step by step helps!”
That slow build—playing small shows, showing up consistently, grinding through the noise—is a reminder that longevity often looks like patience in disguise.
- How do you connect with your audience and what do you hope they take away from your music?
“Vibes.”

One word—but that’s the brand. Whether he’s behind the booth or curating a sound, Outsyd is all about emotional frequency. If you catch the vibe, you’re already part of the tribe.
- What’s your ultimate goal as an artist in the music industry?
“My ultimate goal as an artist in the music industry is to create music that resonates with people and connects them emotionally. I want to build a strong fan base, perform at bigger venues, and collaborate with other talented artists. Ultimately, I hope to leave a lasting impact on the music scene and inspire others through my work!”

It’s bigger than just fame or charts. He’s aiming for emotional legacy—something that doesn’t fade after the beat drops.
- Describe your Artist Journey in 5 Words
“Passion, persistence, growth, connection, impact.”
You can feel his entire arc in those five words. It’s not just what he’s been through—it’s where he’s headed.
- If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?
“I want a Wizkid and Davido feature. I have a very crazy beat for them, and I want just the both of them in one record. I guess everyone wants that too.”
It’s an ambitious vision, but also one you can tell he’s already planning for. He’s not dreaming blindly—he’s building towards moments that shift culture.
