Nikita Chepchumba Kering, one of Kenya’s most compelling vocalists, continues to define the future of African R&B through her emotional depth, vocal control, and genre-fluid artistry. On her new EP “Lick Back,” she leans into emotional accountability and self-realisation, framing the project as a response to love that was not valued the way it should have been.
The title “Lick Back” draws from the idea of getting even or finding closure after being hurt. Nikita says, “It is about getting my revenge for everything to everyone, taking things into my own hands, and being unapologetic. We’re all going through a tough time in this world; I think it’s time someone speaks on it.”
The EP opens with “Intro,” a dreamy and immersive love state built on soft chants, bilingual expression, and warm Afropop textures. From the opening “Je t’aime, I love you baby,” Nikita creates an atmosphere of emotional euphoria, where love feels consuming and almost escapist.

On “Niwache,” she moves into emotional confusion and suspicion within a failing relationship. Singing in Swahili, Sheng, and English, she captures the reality of modern digital-age heartbreak, unanswered messages, emotional distance, and subtle signs of betrayal that slowly erode trust.
“Give Me My Money” shifts the tone completely, introducing a bold and assertive energy. Here, Nikita steps into self-advocacy, demanding respect, fairness, and accountability. On “Outside,” she transforms heartbreak into liberation.
Closing track “Sema Ukweli” brings the project into its most vulnerable space. The phrase “Speak the truth” becomes a plea for honesty, while lines like “2000 steps ahead, then two more back” reflect the exhausting push-and-pull of trying to leave while still emotionally attached.
Ultimately, “Lick Back” is not just about getting even; it is about getting free.
