The acclaimed music producer and engineer hailing from Abuja, has officially stepped into the spotlight with his highly anticipated debut EP, Treacherous Times. Known for his innovative and genre-defying beats, Jiggy YB brings over 5 years of industry experience to this ground-breaking project.

Following the release of “Stop Playing” featuring Tomi Obanure and Kvv; the Listeners of this ace producer stuck. Jiggy YB brings a fresh introspection to Hip-Hop/Rap in 2024 as it seems as though there’s no light in the tunnel for the genre. The producer weaves a sonically pleasing experience of 9 tracks and 13 featured artists with Tomi Obanure’s name ringing twice amongst the tracklist.

The tape starts with a skit titled Treacherous F.M. led by the host of the So Nigerian Podcast Dami Aros who highlights the theme of the tape and the overall state of the country as Treacherous. This opener is a breath of fresh air as most hip-hop/rap or “Nigerian tapes” have lost the act of storytelling in their tracklist and the depth of their content; this opener marks a good start.

Gang was released in August 2023 and marked the inception of this grand scheme by Jiggy YB as it featured Southside Saint. This song fully encompasses the essence of this tape and the originality of each artist featured. Southside Saint voicing “Everywhere I go you know the whole gang goes’ ‘… “So if I blow you best know the whole gang blows’ ‘ speaks highly of the collaborations present on this tape as the burgeoning sounds from the capital echo loudly from those very lyrics alone.

BNB ( Brand New Bird ) serves as the “Connect” song on treacherous times as PsychoYP the undoubtedly fresh prince of Hip-Hop glides with a very charged pen game and contender for his flow steady verses. The depth of this narrative showcases YP’s ability to keep it fresh while sticking to themes. “This Connect” song serves as a double entendre for the genres to switch blending Hip-Hop and RnB on the next track

Fall My Hand is exciting because the cohesion and collaboration serve as a very organic piece between both artists involved in this record. Lobi and Begho offer a very strong connection as seen through the entirety of this tape through other features. Both acts blend Afro-pop and R&B seamlessly while creating this masterpiece. Fall My Hand is one of our favorite collaborations from this tape and a duo that should be more prevalent.

Stop Playing ft Tomi Obaure, Champ & KVV is the most sonically charged of the lot, the beat and the verses come very clutch. The braggadocio, cadence, and essence displayed by the acts involved are awe-inspiring to see. The energy involved does throw the tape off its axis a little in terms of cohesion but it served its purpose of being the lead single and encapsulates the energy the whole tape gives. Remember this tape is pushed by Abuja creatives dominated by Hip-Hop and Grime.

OMG clearly showcases Bolaryn’s artistry. A well-recorded catchy tune with pleasing beats that play on the heartstrings of his love interest; Bolaryn holds his own on this 6th track serving as a melodious anthem that dials down the rap a little for this project. At intervals, listeners are looking to immerse themselves in an experience as opposed to a sequence of songs and OMG takes you on that experience and is beautiful to see.

Area Father ft Eeskay, Bigshyrobot & Bolaryn is pure A&R magic, and Eeskay delivers his versatility on a platter as he engages a melodic viewpoint that stands out and allows BSR to usher in vocals that complement the record. Bolaryn sings backup on this song because we struggle to fish out his output but the entirety of this song is a good listen and well-worked piece.

GHETTO BABY is a song that stands out in lyricism, depth, and overall cohesion. Listening to this particular record felt so much more than a song and an actual story that exists between Yorkk and Marv OTM. Both acts deliver somewhat passionate verses that speak of their craft in terms of being acknowledged and rated. York spills “Way I’m moving quiet you gon think I’m a shinobi”… “Started from the bottom but my bottom double story” while OTM on the other hand spills on being rated as goes “Stepped in the scene and I’m looking hella pricey”… I ain’t no ghetto baby But I’m still good where I be…” the cohesion speaks highly on this collaboration and fans should be paying attention to.

Fresh Like Z ( Remix) is a catchy tune and an eponymous record for Zilla Oaks produced by Jiggy YB. On this remix we see Tomi Obanure enlisted on this remix to further drive the impact of Zilla’s verse, there’s no doubt about Zilla’s ability to flow effortlessly on the beat while keeping his rhythm top-notch. However, Tomi Obanure’s verse does serve as an inflection point for comparison to listeners as it will give them something to speak about at the end of this particular record as to “Who had the better verse?”
