June 5, 2026  Global Afrobeats star Adekunle Gold is the latest artist to be featured on the Recording Academy’s acclaimed Global Spin series, delivering a special performance of “Oba” filmed at King Kosoko Palace in Lagos, Nigeria his family’s ancestral palace.

The performance arrives on the heels of Adekunle Gold’s sixth studio album, FUJI, a deeply personal project that sees the artist reconnecting with his cultural roots while reimagining the rich traditions of Fuji music through his own contemporary lens. As one of the album’s standout records, “Oba” embodies that spirit, blending modern production with heritage-driven storytelling while incorporating a sample of “Iba,” the beloved song by Nigerian music icon Asa.

Filmed within the historic walls of King Kosoko Palace, the performance adds another layer of meaning to the song and the album as a whole. By returning to his family’s palace in Lagos, Adekunle Gold brings FUJI‘s themes of lineage, identity, and legacy to life, honoring the cultural foundations that continue to shape his artistry.

About Adekunle Gold

Adekunle Gold has cemented his place as one of Africa’s most compelling musical voices, balancing consistent hit-making with a continual reinvention of his artistry. On FUJI, his sixth studio album, the Nigerian singer-songwriter expands his signature Afropop sound by weaving together Yoruba percussion, Fuji-inspired rhythms, and contemporary production, resulting in a body of work that feels both deeply nostalgic and strikingly modern. “I grew up on fuji. It’s at every party, every event. It’s ingrained in me,” Adekunle Gold says.

The album serves as a celebration of heritage, identity, and the freedom to explore new creative paths while remaining rooted in culture. Adekunle Gold’s musical journey began in his teenage years as the lead singer of his church choir, where he first discovered his love for music. In 2016, he released his debut single “Sade,” a highlife-inspired love song that quickly went viral. Within two weeks, the record caught the attention of renowned rapper and music executive Olamide, who signed Adekunle to YBNL Nation, marking a pivotal moment in his career.

Since then, Adekunle Gold has released a critically acclaimed and commercially successful catalog, including Gold (2016), which debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard World Albums Chart; About 30 (2018), shortlisted for a Grammy Award for Best World Album; Afro Pop Vol. 1 (2020), which produced global hits such as “Okay” and “Something Different”; Catch Me If You Can (2022); Tequila Ever After (2023); and Many People (2025).

With Fuji, Adekunle Gold views this project as an opportunity to document and pass on his legacy by sharing what he calls “the sound of Lagos” a sound shaped by the presence of fuji music in his upbringing. The album stands as a tribute to the past, a reflection of the present, and a confident step into the future.
