Senegal is set to make history as the host of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, making it the first Olympic event ever to be held in African.
The event is scheduled to take place from 31 October to 13 November 2026 bringing young athletes from around the world to Senegal for a historic edition. The Olympic Games have been staged in Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Oceania but Africa has never hosted it and that’s why it’s remarkable.
The event will make Senegal the first African country to host an Olympic branded event giving the continent an opportunity to showcase its sporting facilities, culture and young athletes. Dakar was selected during the IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina, making Senegal the first African country chosen to host an Olympic event. The event is aimed at athletes roughly between the ages of 15 and 18 depending on the sport’s eligibility rules so this makes Dakar 2026 particularly important for the next generation of African athletes.
The game is not only to determine winners and medalists but also to encourage young people to develop through sport. Africa has a huge pool of sporting talent, particularly in athletics, football, boxing, wrestling, swimming and other disciplines. However, athletes in many parts of the continent face challenges involving facilities, funding, coaching and international exposure. For Africa it is an opportunity to show that the continent isn’t simply a place that produces Olympic athletes it can also be a place where major Olympic competition takes place.
Can Africa eventually host the Olympics? This is probably the question that will fill the mind of people.
Dakar 2026 doesn’t automatically mean that Africa will soon receive the full Games. The Youth Olympics are considerably smaller in scale than the Summer Olympics. If Senegal successfully delivers at the event there could be possible changes.
Around 2,700 young athletes from around the world are expected to compete across 25 competition sports and 10 additional engagement sports making a total of 153 events.
